“You can have peace of mind knowing that a practical kiwi bloke living in the U.S. is handling the logistics of finding and delivering your American car.”
Growing up in Rotorua, New Zealand, I was exposed to cars at an early age through my father, Rory Aitken. My passion for classic cars developed over the years. When I moved to Colorado in 2009 to pursue professional outdoor instructing and pro mountain bike racing, my obsession for cars was then reignited by the availability of affordable, quality classic cars for sale in the area.
“I started wanting anything that I saw at that point. I was like a kid in a candy store and I couldn’t make up my mind!”
I always liked Cadillacs and really wanted a ’63 or ’64 Coupe Deville and was willing to do whatever it took to find my first classic. After three months of looking online, I took a sixteen hour Greyhound bus ride to Idaho to look at what appeared to be a good prospect on the internet. When I arrived, I came to learn that the images and information supplied by the seller online were not accurate representations of the vehicle. I performed a thorough inspection of the car and it was clearly a “no-go.” The car was infested with rust and it was not a driver.
I did not give up. After 16 hours of travel, I accepted the defeating search and hopped back on a bus home, to Colorado. At the bus stop where I started the journey, I began chatting with a dispatch employee about my search. The man’s face lit up when I mentioned that I was searching for a Cadillac in particular. His sister-in-law had a classic Cadillac sitting in her garage just two kilometres down the road. The car was not for sale, but the man could tell I was passionate about this. The man made a phone call to his sister-in-law who agreed to show the car to me (it was the least they could do after his heinous trip). She picked me up from the bus stop and took me to her garage. I was in awe. I had stumbled across a fully original 1965 Cadillac Fleetwood which at one point had been part of her husbands extensive collection. The rest was history.
Now, totally put back to mint condition, the ’65 is a great example of a driver and show car with some tasteful modifications.
With my knowledge and learning through trial and error, I am confident in my ability to find cars and deliver a quality product to meet the demands of the New Zealand buyer.
